Labor Day Weekend = Lots of Manual Labor!

Some of you might remember in my quest to de-1980's my kitchen, I removed the ashy-pink doors and wood veneers from the original kitchen cabinets back in March. Here is an view of the kitchen circa 2007...
Since this photo was taken, we have changed the light fixtures, removed the carpet from the hallway, removed the vinyl and plywood backer from the floors and removed the flowered wall paper.

After removing all of the contents of the cabinets (which have been without doors since March), removing all wall hangings/furniture, and putting plastic over all of the entrance/exits to the kitchen/dining we were ready to sand. When I began this process in March I thought I could just use a chemical stripper, and scrape/steel wool all of the glue from the cabinet frames. Well, after a coat (or 2) of primer, this was revealed to be a GREAT MISTAKE. The primer NEVER dried. All of the frames remained sticky from the underlying glue collecting dirt/cat hair over the past 6 months..... AAAARRRGGGG! We took this weekend to rectify the situation. It was daunting and required the purchase of another Dewalt orbital sander (the Black and Decker mouse sucked for everything but the tiny-ist corners)... Above is the view after most of day 1 of sanding...

Here we are at the end of day 2...

Finally, day 3 of sanding and 4 hours of clean up later... I'm gonna move everything back into the kitchen today (baby's gotta eat)!!! Then hopefully over the course of the next few weekends/weekdays that I am not working, we will be able to prime and paint the cabinet frames and doors (which have been living in the basement). Don't worry folks, I am using a respirator rated for asbestos, so no harm to the baby (or momma)!! The cats have finally gotten used to me looking like Darth Vadar after a few skittish introductions - haha!

Hi, just happened to come across your blog. (I clicked on Kirkwood and your blog came up first...didn't even know I could do that before today.) Anyway, I live in Kirkwood, too. Looked through your blog and really liked it and noticed a lot of simularities. We recently re-modeled our kitchen, too. I have two kids but have lost a pregnancy in the past. (Congrats on yours by the way!!) I saw a family member named Rowan, my son is named Rowan. And I saw someone in your family has a corgi, we have a corgi. Anyway, I'm not very good at keeping up with our blog but come check it out and if you don't mind I'd like to follow yours. Jessica
